Dear Michael:

I believe I have the most in depth "Peirce" family information.

I was just browsing your site and realized I have information of the Peirce family
dating back to the 1600s.

Soloman Peirce was born in Lexington, Mass. June 15th, 1742, the sixth child of
Jonas and Abigail (Comee) Peirce. He was a descendant in the sixth generation of
"John Pers", of Norwch (Norwich), England, who settled in Watertown 1637.

I have a copy of John Pers' last will and testament. My grandfather was fourth
generation of Solomon Peirce.

My interest in your site has come because of the death of my father this past
June, Thomas Robinson Peirce, Senior. I miss him terribly. He was survived
by his two brothers Richard Charles Peirce, and William Laurence Peirce, and
by a half brother (never known) Robert Peirce, a son from my Grandfather's
first marriage. I have a lot more information, if you are interested let me
know.

Sincere Regards,
Catharine Peirce Girouard

Hello Michael.

My name is Brenda . I am not related to any Pierce's. I do live on
Peirce Street. It is in a town called East Greenwich, Rhode Island.

I became quite interested in the origin of the spelling. I inquired at
the town hall and the "Peirce Free Public Library". The librarian was
able to help, just a bit. He stated that Daniel Albert Peirce owned the
surrounding land. Daniel also founded and built the library. He
dedicated an area of the library to his daughter. The children's area
was dedicated because his daughter died young.

This is the only information that they had. I found it peculiar that
there would not be more than this. Especially, knowing he was the
founder of the library. I believe he was born in the 1800's. His
library was built in the early 1900's.

I would appreciate any further information you may have. It will be
nice to explain why the address on my license is spelled this way. So
many people try to correct me. I am sure you have encountered this all
of your life.

  Thank you for your time.

Brenda

Hello Michael Peirce!

Thanks for the interesting Peirce Page on your website. I had written to
you a couple of years ago and found my note posted on your feedback page. I
have since moved and have a new email address, so the old contact
information is useless. (My old message is quoted below.)

I have a reprint of this book about my own Peirce family's line:

Title: The Peirce Family of the Old Colony: or The Lineal Descendants of
Abraham Peirce, Who Came to America as Early as 1623
Author: Ebenezer W. Peirce, of Freetown, Mass.

There are hundreds of Peirce families listed in the 510 pages. It has a
good index and best of all, it includes many delightful stories about the
lives of this line of Peirces in early New England. It's well worth looking
into for anyone who has traced their Peirce family back to the 1860's or
earlier.

The original was published in Boston, printed for the author by David Clapp
& Son, 334 Washington St., 1870. Reprints of this and other Peirce, Pierce
and Pearce genealogy books are available from:

Higginson Book Company

The Peirce surname books are on this page:

The New England Historic Genealogical Society <http://www.nehgs.org/>, has

I hope this is helpful.

Hello Michael,

Its great to see so many Peirces out there and know that all of us have
had to correct people who correct the way we spell our names. How many
times have all of us heard "that's not the way you spell it." Sorry,
just had to get that out.

I have two comments the first is about the Peirce family in
Massachusetts. There are at least two lines of Peirces. One being of the
Charles Sanders Peirce and S.S. Peirce (yes the original spelling). They
are of the Boston Brahman Peirce tree. The others are the Quaker Peirces
who arrived to settle in what is now South Eastern Mass and RI, this is
my family and I am quite proud to identify us as some of the original
Swamp Yankees.

The other comment is about how we pronounce our name. I'm sure most of
you could rhyme fierce with your name. However in true New England style
it rhymes with curse.

How do you pronounce your name I would love to see what people have to
say.

Enjoy!

Dear Michael,

I was please to discover your website. I think and hope that I can be of
help to you in providing early historical Peirce family information.
Both my brother and I have been researching and maintaining Peirce
family historical data for a number of years. Preliminary indications
based on what I have read on your site, including an E-mail you received
from Earl Peirce (epeirce@itsnet.com), suggest that you and I have a
common ancestor, George Peirce (formerly Pearce) who was married to Ann
Gainer (or Gayner). I can tell you much of the history of George and Ann
and their descendants. One thing you must be aware of, that even in
1684, when George and Ann arrived in Chester, PA (near Philadelphia)
from Bristol, England and settled on their 410 acre land grand that they
received from William Penn in what is now Thornbury Township, Delaware
County, PA, there were already other Peirce families here in the New
World. Thus, you might have descended from one of those families. As
luck would have it, I am actually a descendant from two separate Peirce
families. My great, great, great grandfather, Cyrus Peirce, married Ruth
Sargent Peirce of a New England family of Peirce's descended from a
Daniel Peirce, the original settler for that family. Ironically, they
eventually moved to and settled in Bristol, PA where all succeeding
generations in that line are buried, including my mother and father.

George Peirce and Ann Gainer had a total of 10 children, most of whom
married and had offspring. Therefore the chances are great that your
lineage is traceable to one of them. To help me to help you, I need to
know everything you know about your Peirce ancestors, including as many
dates of birth, death, and marriage as well as names of spouses and
children. It's sort of like a nationwide jigsaw puzzle, and we each have
a few pieces. To hopefully help you, here is my list of Peirce ancestors
beginning with my grandfather.

George Peirce (b. 1883, Bryn Mawr, PA; d. 1919 NJ) married Ethel
Matthews Girdwood (b. 2/9/1880, Orange, NJ or Yonkers, NY; d. 4/1962,
Knoxville, TN)

Harold Peirce (b. 1856 Bristol, PA; d. 1933, Haverford, PA) married
Charlotte Augusta Converse

Charles Peirce (b. Bristol, PA; d. Bristol, PA) married Mary Vanuxem

Cyrus Peirce (Concord, PA; d. Bristol, PA) married Ruth Sargent Peirce

Joseph Peirce (b. 10/13/1761, Thornbury, PA; d. 10/5/1847, Concord, PA)
married (4/24/1785, Concord Monthly Meeting, PA) Sarah Pyle (b. ~1761)

Caleb Peirce (b. 10/31/1733, Thornbury, PA; d. 2/23/1815, Thornbury, PA)
married (5/1/1754, Concord Monthly Meeting, PA) Ann Mendenhall (b.
2/17/1737, Concord, PA; d. 2/27/1828, Kennett, PA)

Caleb Peirce (b. 12/21/1692 Thornbury, PA; d. 1/22/1797 Thornbury, PA)
married (4/15/1724 Concord Monthly Meeting, PA) Mary Walter (b.
1/5/1698 Concord, PA; d. 10/1753 Concord, PA)

George Peirce (b. 1655 Winscome, Somerset, England; d. 1/19/1733 East
Marlborough Twp.,PA) married (1/4/1697, Olivestone, Gloucester, England)
Ann Gainer (b. 1663, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England; d. ~1725,
Thornbury, PA)

George Peirce and Ann Gainer had the following children:

   1.Betty Pearce (Peirce)
   2.George Pearce (Peirce)
   3.Joshua Pearce (Peirce)
   4.Ann Peirce(Pearce)
   5.Margaret Pearce (Peirce)

The following URLs are about the Longwood Gardens/Peirce's Park Property
in Kennett Square, East Marlboro Twp, PA. I can give you additional
information about this that is not included in these URLs. It was
actually George Peirce (Joshua'a father) who purchased the property from
William Penn. The original property was 408 acres. At the time of his
daughter Betty's wedding, he divided the property in half. Keeping 204
acres for himself. At his death, his 204 acres want to Joshua. These two
parcels remained separately owned until Dupont bought the Peirce's Park
property. At that time he also bought the other 204 acres and rejoined
the two properties into one. If you ever come to this part of PA, you
should be sure to go to Longwood Gardens. When there, locate the
Peirce-Dupont House and the Heritage Exhibit. Ask for the curator, and
identify yourself as a Peirce descendant. You will be treated to the
"grand tour," being permitted to see the rooms in the house and
artifacts not accessible to the public. When this house was acquired by
Dupont, nearly all of the contents still remained and were included in
the sale. Some of these artifacts date back to 1684 and earlier. It's a
piece of family history you will never forget.

Hello!

I know where there are more Peirce people. I married into a family from
the Albany, New York area of the same name. It took me years to remember
to spell it with an "e" before the "i". (Sometimes I still slip up.)

My name is Jeanne Peirce. Under my maiden name of French I recorded an
album for Columbia Records, wrote a song for Dolly Parton, and sang on a
number of albums and sound tracks. I'm still an obscure artist with a
small following who owns a design and typesetting company, and I still
perform (although I haven't toured in about 3 years).

My husband Jonathan is currently in Taipei. He is a professional sound
engineer and musician (primarily drums and percussion) who toured for 6
(I think) years with Chubby Checker.

If you are interested, I would be happy to collect information on
everyone else (with their permission) and forward the material to you.

I am delighted to learn that there are more "Peirces" out there, and who
they are. I will forward your page to my husband today.

Hi,

Just thought I'd pass on some info I have found on the origin of both
spellings of the name obtained whilst tracing my line.

The pierce/pearce name comes originally from the French "Piers", it is
beleived that after the second crusades a French noble bearing the name
came back to England with the returning armies. Due to poor spelling
etc the name was corrupted and became the two versions we have today.

I do have a coat of arms which are a mixture of French and English
heraldry.

Hope this is of use.

that lived in same place. We can trace it to the Mayflower and to the
Revolutionary war. I know from the letters they skippered the Mayflower, the
Goodspeed. the Desire and the friendship the Ann and another sloop I can't
recall at this time. But cannot find the one who jumped the pond , this has
been going on almost all my life and then some Florance Pierce Peck. Started
this project many many years ago. It was to be her second book to be published.
We have most of the manuscript and copys of wills and probates. And of course
the Book started out with the name where it came from Galfred of northumberland
et. I', Sure you must know that Story well. She gave up this project in 1952
the year of my birth. There are parts missing here and there but as I contact
new cousins that have copies not full we have been able to fill in some of the
blanks. It is our family desire to set this family line straight and get it
published as that was her wish. Though to you I say Hello and goodnight, hope
you can help.

Subject: JOHN KING PEIRCE

Hi,

Enjoyed your page.....so glad to see Peirce spelled right---it's a
struggle, even my father-in-law's tombstone was misspelled!!

We are a Texas family, living in Georgia at this time. We spend quite a
lot of time doing the old genealogy search, and will list our Peirce
line---different from any other I saw:

Capt John King Peirce, b. 1789, Cork Ireland, d. 1855, Columbus, MS,
marr.1821, Newport, RI, Mrs Sarah Oldham FINCH Rockwell, (her father
  Capt James Finch.)

Capt John K. Peirce was captain of the vessel The Governor Woolford,
out of Barbados. He came to Montreal, Canada about 1819, settled there
until he met Sarah Finch in Baltimore, she was the widow of Orlando Rockwell.
They were married in Newport RI, and moved to Tuscaloosa MS, where he went
into business. About 1838-40, the family removed to Columbus MS, where they
remained and raised their family. They had 2 sons, Robert William and John King,
and 3 daughters, Mary, Julia, and Sophia. Their sons both came to Texas
in the early 1850's, and were successful in their endeavors.

Robert William Peirce became a Methodist minister and located in Luling, TX.
He died in 1909, leaving his wife and 5 children.

John King Peirce married 3 times, and fathered 11 children. He was a businessman,
surveyor, and worked with the railroad bringing it into far west Texas.

He was my husband's great-grandfather.

The descendants of this family have spread far and wide, and we always
check when we see the name spelled "our way".

I'd sure like to find some more of our line of Peirces. Hope to link
with others eventually.

Hi, you don't know me but my maiden name is Peirce and since it is not
a very common name , I was kind of curious about where your family is
from. My father was Kenneth Allen Peirce he was born in Kentucky.
He had a son by the name of Kenneth Allen Peirce, Jr. born in Florida.
He is my half-brother ( I have never met him but would like to). If
any of this rings a bell or even if it doesn't please e-mail me back .
Just curious about my family name, and if there are undiscovered relatives
out there.

Thank you,

I just can't believe it! I came across your website and almost had a
heart-attack.

I'm a fellow pEIrce,Chris Peirce to be exact,it's was a real hoot to read
those replies from all over the globe.

My ancestors were nothing to sneeze at either; My great-great grandfather
George Peirce served in the Civil War as a private with the Illinois
Infantry Volunteers, enrolling on May 16th 1864 and served 100 days. He was
engaged in action at Memphis Tennessee on August 21st 1864.

My great-grandfather Benjamin Peirce working as 'prospector' near the town of
Hanford in Northern California enlisted with the U.S. Army on May 16th 1898
and went to Manila to fight in the Spanish American War in the Phillipines.
Ben was a private in Company 'F' 14th Regiment he fought valiently recieving
a personal letter from his company. And why not? He was a tough and
street-wise what would now be called a 'drifter' using the alias of 'Charley'
(as not to add discrace to the family name should he be caught) he would move
with the gold strikes drifting from town to town doing his 'prospecting'. As
a side note during his physical at the Presidio in San Francisco the Army
Physician noted on his Preliminary Exam that he had several tattoos along
with numerous stab, slash and puncture wounds and that's BEFORE he joined
the Army!

Anyway, if any Peirce has any thing on said material they can contact me at
cpe1163579@aol.com,thanks again for such a peircy kinda site!

   Thought this might interest you,cousin.

Here is my relationship to the family:

Ann Baldwin Martin was the youngest of four children. Her father John
Baldwin was a tinplate worker and farmer, who settled in East Caln
Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, about 1751 on land received from
his grandfather. He had been born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on 22 December
1719 and married Ann Peirce 9 September 1743. They removed their certificate
of membership from Concord Meeting of Friends (Quaker) to Goshen Meeting in
1751, which set forth that they have been of an orderly life and conversation,
and frequenters of our religious meetings; and as to his worldly affairs,
they are settled to general satisfaction as far as we know.

Ann Baldwin Martin was wife of Aaron Martin, and they had three children, one
of whom was Thomas Martin. This Thomas Martin had a son Aaron, who had a son
Edwin Seal Martin. Edwin Seal Martin was my grandfather.

Hi Michael,
I've been a fan of your Peirce page for about 4 years now ever since
I first typed in the word "Peirce" on Yahoo. Just thought I'd give you some
updated information. Having graduated from UW-Madison May of '97 I have
been able to maintain a homepage there through friends of mine working at
the engineering computer lab. Anyhoo, I am now working as an
Instrumentation and Electrical Engineer at the Celanese Chemical Company in
Houston, Texas. I have several Peirce relatives, none of which have
homepages though. Just for the record, they are:

James C. Peirce (my dad) -> Jim.Peirce@wemail.wisenergy.com (works
         at Wisconsin Electric)
	Pam Peirce (my mom) -> ppeirce@juno.com  (Artist/Nurse)
Kelly Peirce (my sister) -> kmpeirce@students.wisc.edu (student at
         UW-Madison)
Matt Peirce (my brother) -> don't know (lawyer in Las Vegas, NV)
Marianne Peirce (my new wife) (UW-Madison grad also)
Carole Peirce (my aunt)	-> agacarole@aol.com

I hope business at Peirce Software is going well. Do you know the
history of your Peirce surname? I was recently told that we used to be
Pearce until the late 1800's when somebody decided to change it to Peirce.
I supposedly have relatives in Canada and out East (but don't we all).

	Thanks again!
